Gemini Tote Seals

A leading retailer of consumer electronics was having an issue with losses from theft and pilferage of distributed media (CDs, DVDs, etc.). When they analyzed the issue, they were able to determine that the losses were at least in part, attributable to an ineffective security seal.

The seal they were using was more than 14" long, made of nylon and utilized a metal locking insert. This retailer was able to determine that in the cold, the nylon seal cause the metal clip to fail because of an inherent design flaw when using nylon.

Additionally, nylon often becomes brittle in the cold, causing it to break. The seals were manufactured in mats of 10, which is common, but cumbersome for the process of applying 2 seals per tote. Also, the seal was an adjustable seal, requiring the pickers and packers to always remember to pull the seal tightly to insure a secure closure.

Finally, these seals were very expensive because of how much material content (nylon is expensive) was inherent to the product.

TydenBrooks created the Gemini, which solved the problem of this customer with the following attributes:

• It was a fixed length seal, designed specifically to fit the electronics retailer' totes. This meant once applied, it did not have to be pulled tightly to be applied correctly.

• It was produced in High Density Polyethylene, which reduced the material cost. An acetal locking mechanism was inserted to insure a very secure closure.

• To further reduce cost, the seal produced was more effective and only a total of 6" in length.

• The seals were produced in a patented form with only 2 seals attached to each other; double numbered and matted together. This enabled line workers to easily take two seals from a box and record only one number.    

TydenBrooks engineering team has been able to work with TydenBrooks' customers to produce further enhancements to insure no breakage in high volume pick and pack operations. This capability has enabled TydenBrooks to develop additional variations of the original product. The Gemini and the Tevi-Tag, have been and are currently used in high volume distribution chains, particularly in the retail pharmaceutical chains where tote seal shipment volumes are considerably higher volume and evidence of theft and tampering are more critical.
